…“Defections don’t guarantee victory” – Ex-lawmaker warns

As political realignments gather pace ahead of the 2027 general elections, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has defended its strategy of grassroots mobilisation, even as a former federal lawmaker cautions that a wave of defections alone will not secure electoral victory.

Speaking during a television programme on Sunday, APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, dismissed opposition parties as being more active on television than on the ground, insisting that the ruling party is focused on engaging Nigerians directly at the grassroots.

According to Yilwatda, much of the APC’s work happens away from public view, with television appearances reflecting only the outcome of extensive behind-the-scenes mobilisation. He stressed that the party is not responsible for strengthening the opposition and rejected claims that the APC is promoting a one-party state. “It’s not our duty to help our enemies to grow. I can’t feed my enemy. They should labour, they should go to the streets. That’s why I keep saying they spend more time on TV talking”, he stated..

The APC chairman cited his frequent travels across states such as Taraba and Katsina as evidence of ongoing mobilisation efforts, noting that his engagements are focused on meeting and organising party supporters rather than welcoming defecting governors.

His comments come amid a growing number of high-profile defections into the APC, fuelling debate over the party’s chances in 2027.

However, former Deputy Senate Majority Leader, Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah, has warned that defections, while politically significant, do not automatically translate into electoral success. He said that although defectors may strengthen party structures and bring local influence, voters ultimately decide elections based on performance, trust and the impact of governance on their daily lives.

“Electoral success is determined by how citizens assess a party’s handling of the economy, security and social welfare”, he stated during a television interview, adding that political advantages from defections can quickly fade if voters feel disconnected or dissatisfied.

He cautioned that history has shown parties relying heavily on defections without improving governance records risk rejection at the polls, noting that Nigerians are becoming increasingly discerning in their choices.

While acknowledging the APC’s efforts to consolidate power at both federal and state levels, Na’Allah urged political leaders to focus less on numbers and more on delivering tangible results, describing governance—not party switching—as the true test awaiting all parties in 2027.
